Engine vibration at idle in neutral

Ok. So I got a little too close to the bank Saturday and my prop was torn up. About an inch or so per blade was ripped off. Sounded like it hit rocks. I was at a marina and am quite sure that's what was in the water. Sounded bad, but I had prop replaced while I was there. Mechanic said the shaft was not bent. He put a brand new prop and whatever is behind the prop. When the boat is in neutral, and the prop is not turning, there is a definate vibration from the engine now. When I put in in gear, forward or reverse, it's hardly noticeable. But in neutral it's pretty bad, compared to no viration at all before. I assume it is something between the outdrive and engine. I am mechanically inclined and have built many car engines but am not sure what to look for on this. It's a 1994 Stingray. 4.3 litre Mercruiser. All original equipment with 285 hours on it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard Jimmy,...

Pull the drive, 'n try it...
That way you'll know whether it's the Drive, or the Motor...

Re: Engine vibration at idle in neutral

Thanks. I am not familiar at all with boats. I will google it. Do you mean the whole outdrive? Sorry for the lack of knowledge. Haha. I haven't had a chance to look at it but was thinking there must be something like a driveshaft that is between engine and prop. I'm sure there are gears or a shaft of some kind. Other than the shaft the prop is on. I just dont understand if the shaft is not bent, how something farther in toward the engine could be? I would have thought the prop shaft would have bent first. Again, i'm not familiar with boats. Thanks for your help. Will keep you informed as I will check it out tomorrow evening.

Re: Engine vibration at idle in neutral

Any other suggestions?

yep

do what bondo suggested - thats the first step in your troubleshooting - isolate the drive from the engine

sure, anybody can guess as to what the problem is - from "its all in your head" to "you need a whole new engine/drive assy"

until YOU start looking at it, we have no idea what is going on except you have a vibration in neutral

so pull that drive and run the engine and let us know what you find

I am sure someone else may suggest that when you get the outdrive off, take a flashlight and look in and inspect the splines on the coupler, if they got damaged you could get a vibration... which would be the begining of a possible breakdown later on water... if the splines dont look good, change it.
