I have a Mercruiser MCM228 (1983) that stopped running while on the lake. It was running well and suddenly it lost power and about 10s later died completely. It would not re-start. When the key is turned on the crankshaft moves a little, It does not really turn over for even one full 360 degree revolution - it moves about 5 degrees. The battery is good. I removed the spark plugs to see if it would be easier to turn never, but no improvement. I thought maybe the timing chain was broken and thought if it was then the rotor on the distributor would not move when I tried to start it. I removed the distributor cap and saw that the rotor did move just like the crankshaft. I also tried to turn the engine over by putting a breaker bar on the crankshaft pulley nut but just ended up tightening down the nut. Nott sure where too from here.

Need to find out if its the motor or the drive. I would start by pulling the drive.

Ayuh,.... Then the next step is pullin' the motor, 'n boltin' it to a stand,...

It's obviously got serious problems,...
