Hey! Got this rinky dink, broken down boat a little while ago and put some serious work into it. I'm 16 so don't have the most experience but i've been restoring the 1989 Ranger with an Evinrude 150 XP 2 Stroke 1990 for quite a while. It didn't run so I rebuilt the carbs, changed the fuel lines, rewired some of the boat, and installed bilges, livewell pumps and other appliances. I've been solving problems one by one but the only one troubling me is that my motor switches into neutral while running. This is a tragedy for me because I have worked so hard to find a problem i can't seem to figure out. I ride for a while and im on plane, when suddenly I hear a grinding noise and I slow down real fast and my engine cuts off. I suppose that its going into neutral or reverse. I opened up my gearcase and the lube oil was old but I dont think that would cause something like this solely on the oil. Changed the oil but don't want to take her back out incase I seriously damage something. The gearcase oil screw had some metal shavings but not too much. Is it the clutch cable? Any help would be lifesaving!

You can check for a spun prop hub :

Mark the prop in line with the head of the cotterpin ( or mark the shaft as well)
take the boat for a run until it appears to slip.
Examine the mark(s) if they no longer line up it confirms the hub has spun.

A spun hub will generally drive at low speed but slip as the power is increased.

The other alternative is a damaged clutch dog.
If gears are engaged gently , instead of by a quick snap action, the corners of the dog becomes chipped and mangled then it is likely to slip out of engagement.

With some you can reverse the dog on the shaft so that the undamaged astern side becomes the forward side. I dont know if you can do that with yours.

A badly adjusted remote cable could also be the cause.

Clutch dog is marked with " prop end " I believe.----If prop is OK then check shift rod height.----Someone may have turned the shift rod and unaware of shift adjustment.
