Hello, I have a 72 Johnson Outboard and I plan to leave it in Florida for a year. I have never done anything to it before when storing and never had a problem starting until last year when I had to rebuild the carbs. So after learning the hard way, can anyone suggest an easy way to prvent this. I have searched for fogging and came up with some ideas. What's the normal stuff and procedure to use. Thanks, Skyler

Re: Engine storage

You should run fuel stabilizer through the entire fuel system. You simiply add the stabilizer to the tank with fuel and run it for a few minutes. That will get stabilized fuel through the tank, hoses, filter, pump and carb. I would also pull the spark plugs and add some oil into the cylinders. One last tip store the motor in the down position. Now if you are going to store it in water especially salt water, someone else will have to give you more advice. I have never done neither.

I agree with the above. I would also drain and refill the lower unit.

Re: Engine storage

Just a thought, would it be a good idea to run the engine with the fuel lines detached until it quits? (preferably while cycling it with fresh water through the intakes) I'd hope that running all the fuel out of the carbs would prevent needing to rebuild them in the spring.

Check out the winterization FAQ linked above. It does address this issue. Some say do, some say don't. I personally don't.

Re: Engine storage

On the Stabil, its for FRESH gas, not old gas...and you can run a single carb dry...I wouldn't do it with 2 or more
