I am trying to understand something that happened recently with my engine so that I can address it better next time.

I have run my 130 hp Johnson (1999, 4 cyl, VRO) ob a few times this season. It has been running fine.

Recently I trailered the boat about an hour away. Generally the trailer ride is about 2 minutes to the ramp.

I put it in the water, started it before it came off the trailer. Cranked about 4 sec and started up. Ran about 20 sec, stalled out as I was pulling the boat to the dock.

I could not restart it. The starter was engaged with the flywheel, even when I was not turning the key. Turning the key caused the starter to try, but it could not turn the flywheel. It looked like the flywheel was stuck.

Mucking with it a bit disengaged the starter from the flywheel. At that point the starter would not pop up and engage the flywheel.

I could not get it started for the rest of the week (of course this happened while on vacation).

I trailed it home (another hour)and decided to try it again. Started right up.

I read several posts about lubrication/voltage issues with the starting system that explain the starter not popping up correctly, but I am wondering more about why the flywheel would not turn initially? Maybe something with the timing getting out of sync when it stalled out?

I really have no idea, but would appreciate any speculation.
