engine starts to get hot and smokes

my boat after running about 10 min gets hot and starts smoking a little then gets worse, seems like it is not cooling properly.I have a 1988 mercruser 3.0, where to start looking?

Ayuh,... Welcome Aboard,...

Is this on the muffs or in the water....

A new Impeller is usually the 1st place to look...

i ran it on muffs to get warm to change oil and didnt notice it getting hot, but on the water it got hot

sometimes the water pressure on a hose is just enough to "force feed" the sea water pump in the drive

once in the water, the pump dosen't have enough suction to draw water and its time to replace it

i called the boat shop asking about the impeller and they mentioned 2 of them i only knew of 1. should both be replaced or how do i test

the one in the lower leg sucks the water in .the water pump on the front of the motor circulates the water thru the engine.

The one on the outdrive is the one needing replacement. Very easy to do yourself. Watch vidoes on youtube on how to do it.
