So at eleven last night I think I here an engine trying to start I open my back door and my engine is cranking away . I jump in the boat and turn off the battery. The key was not in the ignition which I guess is why it did not start no spark I guess. Now a little background. This is a new to me boat 1975 Formula 233 center console repowered with a Marine Power 5.7 L
Model #e5.7-mr2
Serial# 29322 Dont know the year but if somebody knows that would be great
Earlier that day I was getting the boat ready for a fishing trip and installing a new battery because it seemed like the battery was bad and I didn't know how old it was. When I would turn the key I would hear a clunk but engine would not turn over. Turn the key again and it would fire right up sometimes it would take a few tries and then the engine would turn over. This engine uses the relay not slave solenoid. Was going to get a new relay but was wondering how the wires go in cant see how to remove them from existing relay. Could this relay be the reason engine was turning over with no key?

I had the same thing happen on an old truck of mine.. turned out the starter relay was shorted. Check your wiring and relay.

Luckily I was home it probably cranked for two maybe three minutes. Anyone able to tell the year by the serial number? How do you get the wires out of the relay and in the new one? Thanks

I would get a volt meter or even a cheap 12V tester,,,
pull the ignition SW(wires intact), turn it - ring those wires to be sure it isn't internally shorted.
