My mercruiser 5.0 inboard just completely shuts off every once in a while. It does it no matter what RPM im running or speed. I replaced all the battery connectors and cleaned the ground to the engine from the battery. The only thing that I have noticed is that the Tach changes sometimes. Usually it reads around 3000 when Im running over 22 mph. If it reads off or starts changing a little, I can tap it with my finger and it go back straight. The temp reads around 170 on a regular basis. As far as I can see, nothing on the motor has anything unplugged or loose. Any suggestions.

Bad ignition switch? Kill switch? maybe bad coil?

Check your tach lead coming off the coil when your motor dies. If your tach shorts out it will kill your spark and the engine.... My .02

Plus 1 on the tach lead. On some engines it also runs to the shift interrupter switch. If this corrects your problem, it's either the wire or a problem with shift interrupter.

I've seen it happen...!

I had a similar issue w/ a 4.3. I would be cruising along and out of the blue and the engine would die. The gages would die immediately, pointing me to an electrical issue. It would happen so quickly that I didn't have time to troubleshoot. It would start right back up. Really annoying, plus just asking for water ingestion when the motor dies at cruise speed.

One time I was able to catch a glimpse of my tach and it actually spun all the way around counter clockwise. I then paid a lot of attention to my tach and it would show intermittent RPM changes when the engine was obviously at constant RPM.

I first looked at the tach but it was OK.

I checked/inspected every bit of wiring I could get to. It wasn't until I cleaned and made sure that each connector was making good connection in the wiring harness disconnect that the problem went away. Hasn't happened in several years now.

Re: Engine shuts off.

Just an update. I did find that a ground wire coming from one of the two batteries to the engine was loose. I tightened it up. Don't know if that would create my problem or not. Also i pulled the dashboard off and checked the wires hooked up to the tach and they were connected good. I dont have another tach to changed it out. I also don't know where the coil is or the shift interrupter switch is. I will try to find out where those parts are and get them checked out within the next couple days.

Another update. I took the boat out sunday and it did not cut off any. The tach did act haywire one time and shot up to 3100 just at an idle. Also, right before we began to load up, the motor acted like it was stalling out when I gave it the gas from a dead start. For about a quarter mile it acted like that then began running fine. Bad gas? Filter?

I still think the tach. Disconnect it from the coil if you don't have another to test with.
