Well after going through the trouble of seeing whether a different style starter would work ok for us we have found that it indeed does work fine no problem. Our trouble now is that it just doesnt wanna turn over. It will slowly crank up but seems to be getting jammed or stuck somehow. Did notice the flywheel looks rusted pretty good and did have some water in the oil but wasnt ran like that. was drained and replaced before anything. any ideas on how we can A) get it unstuck or B) see what the real issue is without pulling the motor for inspection or replacement. Its a 79 omc sterndrive ford 302. Thanks guys!!!

Did you pull the plugs? You will want to do that and spray Wd-40 in each to get any water out, let it sit then turn it over without the plugs in.

pull the plugs, then try to crank it. if water comes out, you have a raw water leak, most likely bad manifold. any water in the oil is a bad sign.

ok. will get at it first thing tomorrow hopefully. was also told and have seen a few places to use diesel fuel instead of wd-40. any suggestions there on which to use?

i wouldnt worry about either WD40 or diesel until after you pull the plugs. if you have water coming out of a cylinder, you have a problem that is beyond what WD40 or diesel will help.

Yes diesel will work also, had same problem on boat I bought last year, turned out even though compression tests were good, the block had several cracks so had to replace motor.

You may want to pull the drive to make sure it isn't the drive causing the problem.
