I need help! My Mercruiser 5.7 Alpha One overheated and then wouldn't start again... My mechanic came over and said the engine has water in it and has seized, and that in order to find and fix the problem he is going to have to take the engine apart, rebuild it, and this is going to cost me $7,000. That seems WAY too high to me. Please help me with and suggestions.

What year is this engine? I just had a 5.7 alpha one rebuilt, or its being rebuilt. Should be done Wed. You can get a brand new one for that price, well pretty close less maybe depending on year, make, and model.

A really good place to buy quality rebuilt and new engines is Doug Russell Marine. They been doing it since the 1950's. Go to dougrussell.com and check it out. If your going to spend 7,000 then I would get a new engine. Thats high, I'm in the process of having a 1992 5.7 rebuilt, it did not seize of but water got in the engine. Cost is supposed to be around 2,000.

You can buy a long block 350 for around $1700 and then maybe $2,000 for a good mechanic to do the swap over of parts and R&R. Say $4K total to be safe...

I've done business with Doug Russell for parts. Good outfit here in MA.

I bought 2 reman long block (not rebuilt, remanufactured) 350s from these guys they come w/ a 2 year warranty (also happen to be in MA):
http://www.marine-engines-inc.com/

They have a complete drop in for $4,534:
http://www.marine-engines-inc.com/gmpp.htm

A lot of iBoaters have bought from these folks:
http://www.rapidomarine.com/

Good luck...

Re: Engine Seized! I Need Help!

Water in the engine and seized are two different things. The first can lead to the second, but not always the same. Remove all spark plugs and try to turn over. If it won't turn over, then it is seized. For instance, bad exhaust manifolds can cause water ingestion, if you remove the spark plugs and turn over and replace the manifolds then re-start, the engine might be able to be saved. If it sits for a week.....forget about it. Or if the water ingestion happens while the boat is at speed....again, the motor is toast.
