Engine revs twice as high to go same speed

1985 Chris Craft Scorpion 230 with 5.7L Mercruiser

I was on the lake on Saturday and the ater was unusually rough (3 ft waves). I hit one wave perfect, and went crashing through another....during the rough water turn, the engine revved high but the boat wasn't going anywhere. I put it in neutral, then forward and it went OK, but now revs twice as high as it did to go the same speed.
Any Ideas?

The first and easy thing would be the prop hub failed

You can mark it and see if its moveing under load OR try a spare prop if you have one

After that it would be time to check the engine coupling

i agree sounds like prop hub failure
