Engine revs but doesn't go

I have a 98' 75 HP Force. I was out yesterday tubing when the engine reved really high while not going anywhere. I was able to idle home in gear. I spun the prop by hand and the shaft spun with it.

Is there any chance this is an easy or inexpensive fix?

Thanks for any help.

You mentioned that the prop spun freely by hand. IF ithe motor is in neutral it will do that . Will it spin when motor is in forward or reverse?

check the shift rod linkage from the engine to the lower unit. it is held together by a pin.

Classic symptom of a spun prop hub. Get some white paint and make a mark(narrow line) across the metal and rubber sections of the prop hub. take it out and try it. If you come back and the marks are no longer in line, you know that the hub has spun. Either rehub it or buy a new prop.

Thanks for responses.
Spun prop was the winner, and yes I had it in nuetral when I was checking the prop. In gear, the prop was fine with light resistance, but spun with heavy resistance.

I replaced the prop with a spare I had and it worked well. When I first got it to full throttle it reved with no power for a couple of seconds but then it was fine. Is this reving warning me of a soon to be problem?

Thanks
