engine revs and wont go into gear

After about an hour of normal stop and go on the water, I cant get into forward. I have read a lot of other posts where boat stalls and wont go forward. I have a merc alpha 1 gen2 3.0 L. Tried it on land and went into forward so back out ot the lake and after about an hour same problem.

What year is the boat and has the lower shift cable ever been replaced? Have you tried to adjust the shift cable and interrupter?

Yes I adjusted cable but dont know how to adjust interrupter switch

Yes I adjusted cable but dont know how to adjust interrupter switch it is a 91 maxum with a 3.0 l I/o I dont know if cable was replaced but it is adjusted correctly
