1967 60hp V4 Evinrude

Accessories and heads removed from block, and block removed from rest of motor, for re-ringing.

Some nasty experiences with sheared bolts on the cylinder heads and on the water covers on the cylinder heads discourage me from wanting to take off covers etc that aren't absolutely necessary to remove. But my natural inclination is to pull everything down and check it and clean it.

I'm looking at corroded bolt heads on various covers and wondering whether it's just surface or whether they'll shear. Then again, it was only the head/water cover bolts nearest the cylinder centres, and greatest heat, that sheared. Maybe the rest will be OK.

Anybody know what the chances are of pulling all these bolts out without shearing one?

Tinkerer,

If you have that much corrosion, I would remove the water jacket covers.

You may shear some bolts, but at least you can work on the heads on the bench. Much easier.

You will probebly need to heat the bolts first if you are to remove them with success.

TMD

Before heat, i'd give the bolts a good soaking with Kroil. Kroil is the best penetrating oil I've ever used. You can find it on the web and they'll ship it to you.

c/6

Hooty
