Can anyone please tell me what this rubber boot-like part is in the front part of my 1971 Evinrude Twin Ski 40 is? After getting it out of winter storage, I am not able yet to start the motor, and am wondering if this might be the reason. As you might be able to see, it looks like a sort of rubber boot that appears to be cracked open, presumably with age. The motor turns over but does not fire.
Update--I just noted that I am not getting spark at either plug. Don't know if that's related, or another problem...

Rubber boot is a dust cover for choke mechanism..----Not your issue.-----Remove flywheel and check for cracked coils / breaker points that need cleaning.

Thanks Racerone. The motor was running great when I put it into storage (outside under a tarp, if that's relevant) last fall. Does that help suggest what the problem is liable to be? It's no spark at either plug. Also, mice did get into the motor, but I have not noted any visible damage.

you may want to pull that rubber connector apart and check for corrosion clean all contacts .... lubricate with light oil spray.

clean all battery posts and connections charge up the battery

Mice need to pee !----The fumes will corrode the breaker points.----Pull the flywheel and service the simple magneto found under there !

yes old style coils and all... if never done coils could be totally cracked up to !!

since this is the old magneto style you may want to download this book which covers all maintenance aspects for these oldys. the book won't cover you exact 1971model but will supply all needed info on magnetos carb etc.. maintenance .. a good investment to service old motors

comes in red or white :)
