I can't find the problem.
The boat has been working fine last year. I winterized it like usual, and removed the outdrive for inspection and to change an oil seal.

I reassembled everything this spring, and went last week end for the first ride of the year.
After 10 minutes of idling, waiting for my friend, the alarm started to beep. The oil pressure was normal, the engine temperature was normal. Since the vital signs were OK, I thought it was something of less importance. So I idled another 10 minutes before heading back to the dock and turned off the engine.

When I opened the hatch, there was smoke from the riser coupling starting to bubble and melting a bit.

After inspection, there was no water being sucked by the RWP. So I put the boat back on the trailer and went home.

I found that when running on the ear muffs, the engine will overheat, but if I run it on the flush port (blue cap), it won't (I ran it for 30 minutes on the flush port at 165*).

I had a new impeller in it. It is still intact, not melted. I put the old one in, just for test. No change.

I installed clear sections of hoses on the RWP, and with the ear muffs, there is no water, but with the flush port, I see some water.

There is no blockage at the inlet hose. When I put the garden hose to the flush port without starting the engine, water goes out the intake of the leg, so it looks normal. There is no leak inside the boat or at the short hose near the gimball.

Now, I start suspecting that the oblong oring around the water passage has moved and air is being sucked from there. I installed an original Volvo oring with Permatex2 to hold it in place.
I won't have time to pull the outdrive before Thursday, but I would like to know what you guys thinks is happening.

And now, my high pressure pumps starts to whine. May be due to the lack of water flow to cool it off. I hope it is not damaged...

Perhaps you have a problem with the circulation pump. On a car that's just called the water pump. Or the drive for the impeller for water from the leg is not functioning.

When you got everything ready for the season, is it possible you flipped the hoses for the waterpump?

I ask as I did just that one year on my Four Winns. Ran fine on the flush port, never overheated. Got it on the water and within minutes the alarm went off. Cooked the impeller and luckily didn't do any other damage....well other than losing the boat for the entire week of vacation while it was tied up at the marina waiting on repairs.

Problem found!

On the raw water pump (Volvo, on the crank pulley), there is a oil seal that keeps the water from flooding the bearing, and keep air out so the impeller can create suction.

From what I read, when that oil seal fails, water goes out in the bearing. Only a few times water get sucked inside, and create problems to succion the water from the outdrive, which was my case.

I replaced the seal and went for a 3hrs ride and everything is good.
The seal that was there was a single lip (don't know if original). The one I bought is double lip. $5 part that almost cost me an engine!!
