Actually, the change back to 50:1 was due to long term storage problems (rust). Nothing to do with engine failures while running. Many are still running 100:1 30 years later because the owners didn't get the word.
100:1 didn't leave sufficient coating of oil on internal bearings and rust had a chance to get at them.
50:1 is the currently correct mix.
