Hello All
I have a 2016 evinrude E Tec 90 hp with 201 hrs . My last trip of this season on a 14 mile lake crossing was a problem, I trimmed my motor out and it did not stop, the motor continued up until it could go no further however the trim pump continued to run, I disconnected my battery and it stopped, I managed to paddle to shore and waited about 30 minutes and reconnected my battery, the pump did not run so I trimmed the motor down and decided not to touch the trim buttons. Arrived at my destination, removed the cowling and found the wires on a stud were slightly loose, I tightened the nut and tested the trim, everything worked fine, Now about 5 days later, went to start my motor and could not get it started, it would turn over but no fire, killed the battery, came back with a new battery but decided to try one more time before changing the battery and it fired up first try. WTH. Motor ran fine trim worked fine. left the boat for a week then was coming home , went to start the motor same problem, turns over no fire , have fuel in filter, changed out the battery, still no fire , tried about 30 minutes later and it starts perfectly, WTH . The only thing i did was tightened the nut on a loose connection and now I have starting problems. Hoping All of you WIZARDS can help me out. I cannot have an unreliable motor as I am on an isolated lake with not much traffic in the spring and fall. Look forward to your comments.
Thank-You All for listening

Neutral Safety Switch or Man Overboard Switch ?
Get a cell phone and a Emergency V H F radio and fold down antenna.
Describe your boat. Does it have a dashboard or side panel ?

first.... the trim thing....if not a sticky trim button the relay contacts may have developped corrosion from arcing over time and...and are now sticking closed.... hence the trim motor not stopping. nothing to do with engine starts.

starting or not...

ETECs don't like loose connections that can cause spikes all the way back into the EMM. Battery post wing nuts have a notorious reputation !

You are now faced with the necessity of peering into your EMM fault log with EV diagnostics to get more info on what is messing up your own mind and the EMM decision making process.

If you don't have EV diag read up this document. If you have G1 or G2 get the correct version software if you decide to buy. I think G1 is up to ver. 5.9 G2 ver. 6

As to "start no fire"... some basic wirings checks are in order but the EMM won't fire plugs unless adequate RPMs are developped and valid Crank position sensor signals are picked up.
some of these things can be logged as fault codes so EV diag is essential to ETEC servicing.
Keep in mind that only SENSOR picked anomalies will be logged. The EMM can't see plugged up fuel filters, injector mechanical issues (only electrical) , stuck high pressure pump in the VST if the electrical amps are ok, fuel flow issues (hose, tank pick-up, stuck VST venting needle.

some problems are just maintenance shortcomings and the EMM can't guess on any. .

if you are not familiar with the ETEC owner's group do visit heir site where ETEC problems are posted and experts can reply. It also has a good seach utility for known/past problems submitted
