I recently bought a 1980 Starcraft with a Ford 302 and a Mercruisier 888 sterndrive. The engine runs a little rough, but once it warms up, seems to do okay. The boat will idle fine, and I can throttle up in neutral with no problems. The boat will also operate in reverse and I can give it gas in reverse. The boat will run at idle in forward and go at wakeless speed, but if I try to give it any gas at all, the engine immediately kills. No sputter, or cough, just kills. I also have a lot of play in the stearing.

Any ideas anyone?

Sounds like a fuel delivery issue. Check your filters. Carb may be having some issues too, but the filters are easy to start with.
