Engine Just Wont Start on its own

Hey, i have a 50hp evinrude motor, the engine is from 1972 but still in great condition, I recently started to work on it and the engine just wouldnt start, put fresh gas in primed it etc. I took off the cover and sprayed some carb cleaner in the carb and it started up for a second or two and then died, im guessing the carb cleaner is what ignited to start the engine, so i know its not seize or bad. I think took a cup of gas and poured it straight into the carb and engine started right up and stayed on for a good 10-15 seconds until it ran out of gas. So i came to a climax that the engine just isnt getting the gas. I followed the lines to each section of the motor and the gas flows to the filter fine, then to the first carb fine and im not sure if the second carb is causing this issue. I will take it apart because im guessing theres a clog in the line, but im just not sure how the engine operates. Im used to small engines with just one carb and intake line. If anyone can help me out and tell me what u think the problem is that would be great .

If the motor sat for a long time the carbs are probably gummed up may be not filling with gas or are filling but passages and jets are plugged so it won't run.

so probably the best thing to do would be to, take the carb off and clean all the passages out?

2-stroke engines get their lubrication from the oil that you mix with the gasoline. When you spray carb cleaner though the carb while the engine is turning, what you are doing is running an engine that has no oil. Same if you are pouring gas in, unless it's premixed with oil.

did you pump the primer bulb until it was firm? did the line hold pressure? did you engage the choke while cranking? (is it electric choke?)

the solution here is to disassemble the carbs, soak overnight in carb cleaner, blow out the passages with compressed air (or aerosol carb cleaner), reassemble with new carb kits, reinstall, link & sync, adjust mixture screws (if equipped).

A manual would be an excellent investment.

i totally agree with JT. the engine has to have 3 things, proper compression, proper spark, and proper fuel/air mixture. what did you add? fuel, but not the right mixture. and read this: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=158086 when we get what engine you have more help will be here.
