Hi errbody,
I may be getting a good deal on the engine below. Itll be a gamble for sure but figure it's worth a shot. Unfortunately I couldnt find any badges on it and godzilla wasps kept me from getting any better pics.
So does anyone recognize this engine? Year range? Long or short shaft?
Appreciate any help :)

That would be a 1973 to 1976 model 65 or 70 HP.------More good product getting dragged out for eager buyers.----Looks like a $200 motor to me.

Much appreciated for that lighting fast and accurate response
It really wasnt getting dragged out to sell. A friend has it and really wants it out of his yard. Really only worth 200? Because gamble or its just old?
Can you tell if short or long shaft?

Agreed----It should be free !!----Take the other lower unit too.----After looking again , I think it is a 1976 based on paint color and motor linkages.----It is a long shaft based on steering hook up.

Good deal? If it were free it would still be a bad deal. Repair costs in parts alone would exceed the value. If the engine is not seized it would be a miracle.

Tell your "friend" you will remove it and haul to junk yard for him, for $70 an hour, 4 hour minimum, plus any tipping fee, and any injuries to your back will be covered on by his home insurance.

Perhaps leave it where it is for the wee critters to build a home again.-----Looks like they were in there already.

my guess is your "friend" currently is upset with you

its worth $0.10 per pound as mixed metals scrap after you remove the lubricants, hoses, etc. (and have more than a ton)

if you break the motor down to cast iron, steel and aluminum bits, the aluminum is worth $0.53 per pound, steel is $178 per ton

Roscoe and racerone have the right answers just above.

My friend is a great guy and knows nothing of the boat, trailer, or engine. We only just started discussing and asked if I could take it.
IDK, does this engine offend people? Am I missing something?
Also, I don't know where you all live but engines in my area are going for a lot of money, including 'parts engines'. Nothing here is free or even close to it.
Thank you all tho for helping me identify, and to obviously stay away from it. I was going to take it as a challenge to try and get it going.

Your location ?----I am not offended at all.----I believe it is a 1976 model.---I think they were great motors back then.-----Might even have 1 or 3 in my collection too.----Certainly lots of parts for one.-----And yes if it had been stored inside on a rack it could be as good or better than a new motor.-----But it has been abandoned and to us it is a parts motor.---I for one would not try and start a motor like that.-----It would come apart.----Every nut and bolt , before buying any parts.------Worth 15 cents / lb as is..

Asside from the obviousness that the motor was left neglected outside to the elements for years, making it no longer useful as a parts motor

There is a big corrosion hole in the leg, a decade of moss and mildew, the coils are cracked. Not sure what you see as value.

None of us have a dog in the fight. You asked what its worth, we told you.

If you got it for free, pulled it apart, cleaned and cataloged every part, you may be able to make a few $. However you may be sitting with those parts in your shelf for years

Sorry if we offended you. Many of us here are boat nuts and we cringe when we see something that was left to deteriorate like that. As a corollary, its kinda like leaving the windows in your house open and then moving to live with a relative because you can't pay the electric bill. The house fills with bird droppings, the rain rots the floor, the basement fill with water and the whole house fills with mildew. The only solution at that point is to demolish the whole thing, and unfortunately the cost falls on the taxpayers because the city now owns the house.

The lower unit has muffs on it and the cowl is removed. Obviously, someone tried to start it and found that it didn't run. He then abandoned it. At that point the engine had value, mainly because IMHO it was one of the best outboards ever made. But left to deteriorate its now worth less than scrap metal.
