A crooked and sh....hole shop that does not completely bolt down your motor mounts after a new transom / motor mount stringers so why you are goosing the motor the whole thing is lifting off the mounts thus jacking up the alignment to the drive.

or so i've heard......

I purchased an 86 SR from Stuart Florida that new rebuilt motors were recently installed. They were. No rust at all and ran great. Prior, I trusted a so-called marine surveyor to be honest and competent to survey transom and stringers for rot. He wasn't. During sea trial, boat/motors ran flawless. No leaks! Months later I discovered rot during my retro-fitting of bells and whistles. The whole transom was rotten. When motors were installed, mechanic had to have noticed rotten transom and either didn't tell owner or told owner and owner decided to sell. Y pipes were also "cancered." It has taken me 3 + years to get the SR as close to perfect as to my liking. Moral to story... Unless you absolutely trust a mechanic, do the work yourself and inspect everything!

The motor came out slicker then snot on a door knob. Total time was 3.5 ish hours for outdrive and motor. Hopefully next time we can lower that......or wait not hopefully?!! I had to leave after this so didn’t really get to poke and prode the stringers but they looked good. Side note GO CUBBIES!

Poke and prod, especially that old of transom! Trust me!

agreed, clean bilge and at least make 4 test drills, to in the transom, 1 each in the motor mounting blocks. if shavings are light, dry and smell like wood.....simply put marine tex in the holes and buy a lottery ticket.

Update: But not hard to believe. After inspecting the stringers the motor mount on the port side had about 3/4” of up and down play. Getting ready to rebuild probably just do both whilst I can 😒😒🤑

Do forget to drill or test transom. If bad, now is time to replace or send boat to landfill. Sorry! I've been there too! You have already performed a lot of the hard work. Rot usually, but not always, starts at the boat's drain hole and moves up. Get ready for a lot of drilling and grinding. Mark datum points on everything that you intend to grind down so that you do not over laminate when rebuilding and cannot get anything to line up latter on.

just food for thought

when I helped my bud re-deck his 18' 'toon, he wanted minimal furniture. just an aft seat box that houses the batteries, radio, amplifiers, speakers, fuel tanks, and life jackets and a removable seat behind a very small side console to hold the steering wheel, throttle, drink holders and the fish finder

if someone wants to go fishing, we bring only fishing gear
if someone wants to go cruising, we bring folding lawn chairs and coolers of booze. sometimes we bring a grill
if someone wants to go golfing, we bring the clubs and snorkeling equipment to retrieve the balls.
if someone wants to go raft up for swimming etc, (sometimes with dogs), we bring less furniture, more coolers and booze

Next page?!? We put the engine in with a small hiccup when aligning the motor over stringers (left truck in gear and broke distributor). All back together now and the prop seems to have a lot of “sloppy play” there is a new hub on it. ???
not sure what happened
