Hi All,

I've got a fleet of 30-55HP JohnnyRude outboards that are used infrequently (6-8 times/year) in salt water.

What's a good protectant that I can spray down the engine compartment with between uses?

Currently, I flush and wash down with fresh water after each use and give a good spray down with WD-40, then throw cover on and store.

Is WD-40 sufficient for this protectant/lubricant purpose or is there something that is better for about the same (or less) price?

Thanks!

Re: Engine compartment protectant

I like OMC 6-in-1. It's like WD40, but has some wax and other stuff in it. Seems to keep the under cowl components from drying out from the salt so much, and corroding. It's more expensive than WD40 but it's really good stuff and it stays on longer.

OMC and Pennzoil also sell a spray on wD40 mixed with some kind of sealant/clear paint, advertised for just the purpose you state. I don't like it...when it dries out it flakes off all over the inside of the motor, then gets sucked into the carbs.

Thanks LF,

Yeah, I find with the WD40, it's great for cleaning but seems to dry out for any kind of storage period. I am looking for something that leaves a light coat to protect from rust. I'll check out what that OMC 6n1 has.

Thanks!

Marops,
A buddy of mine sprays Pleadge furniture polish on his 1970 Harley for storage. there is not one spec of corosion or oxidation anywhere on it. He says it washes off with soap and water.

Marops, While boating the San Juan Islands I overheated my Johnson 70( sea grass blocked water intake) and melted my WD-40, causing it to slough off. I had the Port Townsend Tech retorque my head and he suggested I use LPS-3. It is sprayed on and sets up a waxy coating that does not go away. When my local tech saw how well it worked, he started stocking it. Pete

Which ever you use save some bucks by buying it in a gallon can and use a spray bottle. I been using WD-40 for years and have had no problems with it - I'm not partial to it either.
