1980 ChrisCraft Scorpion 230, 5.7L V8, (I think originally Merc 260).

When adjusting the engine alignment, is it OK to just use the adjusting nuts to raise or lower the front of the engine? I know the best way is to use a hoist.

Currently, the alignment bar is very tight to the the top of the coupler.

Re: Engine alignment

You don't use a hoist to do the adjustment, That really wouldn't help that much because it seldom pulls from the center of the engine.
Use the nuts on the mounts, that is what they are there for.
If you are tight on the top of the bar, then you need to lower the engine.
Don't forget, if the rear mounts are soft or damaged, they will sag and cause the same problem. And you won't be able to adjust it out.
you also need to turn the engine a half turn and make sure the bar fits the same, then try at quarter turns.

It is definitely a mutt. Thanks for the information. I thought the weight of the engine needed to be supported while the nuts were being turned. I'll check the fit with the half and quarter turns.

Don, what if it dosn't fit well after the engine is turned? I would guess that means the coupler is not centered. how would you adjust that?

Re: Engine alignment

You don't adjust it, you replace the coupler.
