Embarrassing question

Bought a rebuilt late 70s 140HP on a refurb pontoon boat. Engine model looks like 140863C. Prior boat experience has been stern drives and a 2 stroke Suzuki. Trying to figure out where to put the oil! Took the cover off hoping to see a dipstick and an oil cap but see neither. Got a service manual and it talks about points to lubricate and the drive oil, but don't see anything about engine oil. Help!

Either a tank onboard, or you premix 50:1

A late 70s engine would be Premix only. TCW-3 @50:1. I hope you haven't run it yet, without adding the Oil to the Gas

I believe you should read an owners manual about 2 times before turning the key.----Talk to some people to learn the basics.------Outboard motors are easily ruined by folks with no experience

Did previous owner think it was a 4 stroke ?----Dealer sold it to you as a 4 stroke ??-----I think you might want to test compression for now and future reference.

you may have broken the power band if you ran it with no oil .

seriously: add 20 ml of oil to every liter of fuel ,i don't know gallons and ounces off hand but the mix above equates to around 50:1, that is safe for most 2 strokes requiring pre mixed fuel.
FWIW , that motor will run fine @ 60 or 70:1 ,or going the other way 30 to 40:1 so don't be confused or concerned if you mess the mix up when learning. Just make sure it has TCW3 2 stroke oil and your motor will be fine.

be sure to add the oil before the fuel when mixing .

The 1978 models did not come with oil injection.

Learning a lot with this supposed completely rehab pontoon. Had to replace the helm when that broke. Some starting challenges that are now starting to make sense since I was using just gas... What dealer told me was to use non ethanol gas but nothing about oil, told me 4 stroke, I just worked from my experience with stern drives. Will add oil to what is in the tank and get some new cans for mixed gas.

You are saying you ran it without Oil added to the Gas? And the Dealer/Salesman said it was 4 stroke?

Yes, but not much

How much is "not much" and at what throttle setting?

Through the winter I would run it at low throttle for a few minutes just to keep things running. Maybe 30 minutes over the course of the winter.

How long ago did you buy this potential Anchor, and did the Dealer put in Writing it was a 4 stroke, and was there any Warranty?
I'm not going to assume there any Oil in the Gas that was already in the tank, but how much fuel was in it, and how much did you add?

Bought November, no warranty. Tank half full, ran that, added another 20 gallons, now half full again

If, and that is a Big If, the tank had 20 gallons of 50:1 premix and you added 20 gallons, the result would be in theory 40 gallons of 100:1, but that would also assume complete mixing of the old and fresh gas... How much time running was even the slightest bit above Idle?

Do a compression test as was specified.
