Because I am being blitzed with KLEZ in a hundred different disguises I have changed my Email address and it is no longer available.

Because the perp is selecting boating related return addresses I have to accept the possibility that it is someone here.

If you need to contact me, please Email iboats, who will forward your message to me.

Thanks.

Re: Email viruses

Sorry to hear about that, JB. I hope the perp, regardless of who it is,is clueless about it.Because I just couldn't understand anyone here doing that to you on purpose. That really would stink, and that is putting it in iboats.com terms!!
I too, am having puter problems, but I belive mine are all networking hastles,as the hangup seems to be only with an application called "RNAAPP", that loads itself upon logging-on.
Samey same tho, it's a major payne.
I hope that ends the attacks.

Re: Email viruses

JB, I am sorry to hear that. I hope the person does not know they have the virus and it is just resending. I hope you informed them they have it, but if you are getting a bunch, that is not possible. I also hope you have an email virus program.

12 Footer, I am sorry you are still having problems. Sometimes, a reload is all that will work.

Re: Email viruses

Yea JB, if you are getting it from the same person, then they might not know they have it.
I get some also from time to time but my NAV catches them and quarantines them for me so I don't worry about them.
They always come from some way out e-mail addy and I know that it is just someone trying to spread the virus.

Re: Email viruses

KLEZ virus and all its variations is still running rampant. It is the worst and most widespread virus to date.

Try going to a small, free, privately run classified or forum site and once your address is in the system, it will soon be attacked.

Most decent sites have software in place to prevent their servers from being infiltrated. And I would bet iBoats has this in place, or we woould all be getting attacked.

I would bet your address got onto an unsecure mailing list, or just into someones computer, which later became infected.

For anyone interested, here are a few links with more info on this virus.

http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_99367.htm

http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99455

http://www.cio.uiuc.edu/security/klez.html

Re: Email viruses

Almost a year ago, KLEZ knocked out half of the computers in this office. It spawns itself without the perps knowledge. I found that Norton antivitus works well, and checks nortons website each time you start up for new virus definitions, and scans emails you send and recieve. I wasn't hit by this virus (or any other) because the Norton intercepted it, told me its name, quaranteed it. You can buy and download it online. Well worth the minimal cost.

Re: Email viruses

Scoop,I tried a re-install, to no avail. I brought home Winders 2000 pro to replace 98, but have cold feet without burning a new set of backup CDs, (about 10CDs worth) first.

But you may remember the procedure for getting rid of a password login prompt at bootup??? (a window asking for user name and a password, and if no password is entered, it won't prompt again, which is a lie)...Anyhoo, sound familiar to anyone?

I recall it was as simple as checking a box somewhere, but I can't remember where to go to get rid of it.

Re: Email viruses

Never had password prompt appear for the last 4 years on 3 computers. But now I am using Direcway 2-way satellite system for my ISP, and it appears every reboot. I thought it was a byproduct of the LAN that I use to connect to the satellite via USB2.

I would also be interested in not seeing the password login. Does anyone know how to eliminate it without doing windows re-install? or re-formatting the drive?

BTW - the Direcway system is great, and fast.

Re: Email viruses

12 footer, I know what you mean. An image with that many disks is tough. It would almost be better to buy and install a second hard drive to install the new operating system on, then restore your data to the new hard drive.

In Windows 98, you should be able to find a .PWL or .PWD file. Rename the extension to .old and then reboot, this will remove the login. If you then click ok to the login without entering anything, that should remove the login. This is from memory, it has been years since I ran or supported 98. Good luck with it.

In windows 2000/XP, it is possible to do it, but I don't know how, nor would I suggest doing it. the passwords are not hard to deal with nor are they slow and it does add security. Windows 2000/XP uses the login and password to secure and authenticate anyone that tries to login to your computer from anywhere including the internet. Windows 98 is so insecure, a password does not help secure anything.

One other thing, I would suggest going to the Microsoft site and doing the critical updates. While it seems most people are not using the holes in Windows or IE, it is only a matter of time and it is not worth the risk since Microsoft made it so easy to do.

One other note, if you are using an illegal copy of XP, you will no longer be able to update your windows. Microsoft now is tracking illegal copies and is encoding this into their service packs. It will not let you patch XP if you have a copy that is listed.

Re: Email viruses

JB i hate to see this happen, and i just now thought about what/why/who you might accept email from.
of course, you know email is where most if not the bulk of a crappy virus comes from. you should get iboats.com to set you up with an addrss off their webpg with an FQDN... or a long a$$ name, and then you can treat your email responses as you have in the past- if you don't recognize them, asta-le-veesta(poor spanish)!
but anyhow, remember its not too awful hard to avoid the bullschidt if you keep in mind that the bombs are mostly coming from perverts/juveniles/rejects & your good ole standard bullies cloaked with a computer... not rocket science really, just basic computing hygiene is needed.

with that said, too bad about your old account  hope you don't get too worried about your pc-security, just search for some shareware downloadable stuff.

once you're a celebrity, then its much harder, so you'll have to work that possibility on your own- good luck seen'yor! :D

please remember to visit the "windowsupdate.com" site and get your latest computer vitamins on a regular basis.

Re: Email viruses

I had about 1300 infected files when I discovered KLEZ. I only found out because the hard drive was crunching away (replicating) when the computer was in sleep mode and I knew that it shouldn't be doing anything. I constantly get infected emails these days. You're right, JB, it's a royal pain.

Re: Email viruses

After getting a lot of good info on KLEZ from 'putersperts I don't think it matters whether my address is available here.

It is now available again. :)
