Re: Elto 12HP Motor

Man, I am glad that people know as much as they do. Thanks Capt Paul. Yes the fuel does flow freely from the carb line, the filter is clean and no clog is found there. Any other suggestions?
Thanks again, you are a smart man!
Dean

Re: Elto 12HP Motor

Hi, I've entered this forum in the hope of obtaining some valuable advice from people who seem to really know about the subject;

I have inherited a Canadian manufactured 'ELTO Speedster' model 12ED10 serial number 14437 and have spent this weekend trying to get her running after decades of storage - unfortunately with limited success amounting to about three seconds running.

I am looking for advice on a number of issues;
1) Can anyone confirm the age of the unit? My uncle said he thought it was 1929 but I suspect it's much younger?
2) Is it water or air cooled ( I couldn't locate an obvious 'tell-tale' outlet to signify water cooled?)
3) Spark plugs are "Prestolite 14 7 X" but I don't know what the correct gap size is?
4) Should the fuel/oil mix be 8:1 or 16:1 (or any other ratio??)
5) I've managed to snap the choke control rod connecting to the carb and suspect I'll have to get another manufactured by a precision engineer - unless anyone knows of a 'work-around' solution?? (I've temporarily had to plug it with a machine screw to limit fuel loss from the bowl)
6) I'm guessing the lack of choke control may be contributing to the difficulty in starting / running - anybody got any ideas?
7) There is a spark at the plugs, though the (resin??) insulation around both coils is shot, most has cracked and fallen apart and I expect they must be replaced for the engine to be viable, does anyone know the availability of replacements or alternative units I could obtain (preferably in the UK?)
8) I have lots of photos and a short video clip of the brief moment of firing (after about 40yrs of storage) if they would help anyone to solve the 'challenges' I've described above??

Sorry to post such a large list, but I'm quite excited at the prospect of this beautiful old piece of engineering being brought back to life if it is at all feasible, so I would be really grateful for any advice available.
Best Regards,
gvinnyg

You will not get the most or fastest help by hijacking a conversation that ended 7 years ago, gvinnyg.

Start your own thread with your own questions. That way it will be your thread, not one hijacked from the archives.

Good luck. :)
