Re: Electronic bilge pump switch

Yeah, I saw those. The small one, like 500gph, is the turn-on-every-few-minutes type. The FET sensor type seem to only be on the really big ones. Then, some still use a built in float, and are double the size of a non-automatic pump. This is why I wanted to use a small round one, like 500/800gph, and a small sensor switch. Trust me, you don't know what will work until you try and fit these in the sump. I can actually fit a 500gph pump (w/90? elbow on the discharge), a Rule float switch, and a snap type drain plug in my sump. BUT, if even one tiny bit of junk gets in there, the float will jam. I'm talking 1/8"-1/4" clearance. I don't know what you use the boat for, but I fish for Fluke and Bluefish, which puke up vast amounts of bait that gets washed back to the sump. On my prior boat I had the pump mounted in an area that never fouled. I can see this Whaler sump filling up with debris fast. I still will probably fabricate an easily removed and cleaned screen on the bottom of my fabricated sump cover.

Re: Electronic bilge pump switch

I found a Water Witch switch on Epay and the seller was kind enough to add the instruction sheets. There was a disclaimer that basically said "Rain water will dilute the normal fresh/salt water to outside of the normal detection calibration". It seems fresh/salt water have a lot of minerals that the WW is calibrated to detect, and rain water is a PROBLEM. Hmmm....

So I wrote to SPX, the makers of Johnson products. Gregory Pardus, the General Manager, Marine Americas, wrote back saying-
"The Ultima Switch will detect rain water without a problem. The switch will even detect de ionized water. Rain water will not be an issue." Looks like I will be buying the Johnson Ultima switch.

Good to know, thx.......Found a little info too, interesting.......This Mirus field effect caught my eye, I was curious about that. Has a bit of hysteresis built in. Cool indeed.....

SPX Johnson Pump for Boatbuilders, Pleasure, Commercial & Fishing boats

This next link, I'm not sure about. About a third of the way down is a write up on the switch.....I've never used the switch so I don't know the validity here but, came across this and thought I'd just pass it on to ya. If it's true that the wires are leaking(I think the guy is just guessing), maybe RTV or something.

Also, ya might consider, dates in this article are in 08. Seems if they had an/any issues, it should have been fixed by now..........

Bad Practice

All just FYI's......Looks like it should work nicely, does 20 amps too. Think I'm going floatless too, just haven't decided on the sensor yet, this hysteresis will tend to prevent oscillating the pump/s, I like this idea. I think I might put several in parallel though for redundancy. GL

Thank's Sam am I. A great site that Bad Practice. I've read that about the Ultima being good then bad, or intermittent. Sounds like the wires are not watertight. Not a problem for me, I go through gobs of liquid electric tape on everything electrical on my boats/motors.
