I have a 1998 3 cyl. Mercury 40 hp. manual motor w/ a tiller. It did not come w/ an electric starter. It does, however, have the bolt holes on the block to bolt the starter to and the flywheel has teeth. Is there some cheaper way to put an electric starter on it w/out buying the kit that I priced at the dealer for $360? Thanks for the help.

JCH

Welcome to iboats,JC.
That's plain absurd to attempt to charge someone more than 150 bucks for a starter and soleniod..That's all you need, the starter and soleniod for that make/model motor.
I think that guy is qouting you for the required flywheel and mounting hardware also (which tyou allready have).
Keep checkin Ebay for a used starter. And go to your nearby auto parts store, and buy a genric ford soleniod for 8 buks..An ignition key with start, and you are there.

Check your local boat salvage yards for a good used starter.
They are also available on ebay from time-to-time.
There is also a guy on there calls himself "MERCOUT" .He can get anything Merc, and is a prolific seller.
New ones are available at any Merc shop (they may have to order it,and it won't be cheap).
As for the soleniod,a generic soleniod can be found at any auto parts store for 10 buks or less, and are a bit heavier-duty than the original equipment. It should bolt onto the block same as the orginal, but you may have to leave-out one bolt (they are a tad larger).
If you need a schematic, email me, and I can draw something up for you.
