For reversing with the mechanical brakes I have, there is a lever that folds down to stop the hitch pushing against the brake rod thus preventing the brakes operating when pushing backwards. I'll take some photos this weekend and post them, as they say, one picture equals a thousand words. My trailer's wheel travel wouldn't be any more than 3" and the brakes work very well (so far).
