I am wondering if the flywheels on a 1976 35 hp evinrude are interchangeable. I have the rope start model and found an electric start flywheel. It looks like it would work because it has all the rope start grooves and everything. To me they look indentical other than one has teeth. If anyone could help me that would be great.

Thanks

I know the 25hp of that vintage will interchange, I would guess that it is the same with a 35hp.
I am sure someone will come along and correct me if I am wrong.

Re: electric and rope start flywheel compatability

well guys i got the electric start flywheel and everything is good except the flywheel keyway is in a differant location. Now my questions is if I get the flywheel located correctly and torque it properly it should stay in place right. From what I have read on other forums the keyway does not really keep it from turning it just lines it up, it is the torque that keeps it from turning on the crank. So is it a terrible idea to put it on without the keyway or my other option is to machine another keyway in it.

The key sets the timing, it needs to be there. If you could luck out and get it set to the proper time, it might start, but I don't know if it would stay in time.

Key is NEEDED. First time the motor hiccups or if you shift gears with a load on, the flywheel will move...
