It is my opinion that this website is "too flashy" and bloated with features and routinely locks up my FireFox, forcing me to quit and lose all my tabs.

Now, I'm sure the site works smoothly on the admins computer, but some of us use different devices. Right now on on a Mac and it's tolerable, but I can't even sign in on my Galaxy S5

Thank you! I to am very frustrated with whats going on with this once "GREAT" site, I wrote a one sentence blurb about the new & unimproved iboats and the moderators quickly closed the post. Heck most times I cannot post photos or even reply to a post very sad.

I think rant was used much more accurately to describe your 2 sentence Topic rather then using blurb. Closed because the Johnson OB forum wasn't the place for it anyway.

I surf thru iboats via an android phone, my laptop and a desktop. It's not perfect, but completely manageable, and worth a 1,000,000 times more then I pay for access.

For an avatar pix, it's got to be a really small file size, 5-10kb max, if I remember correctly.

I just checked, and your avatar pix must be 100 X 100, that's really small. My current avatar is 1.58kb and about 85 X 35. If the main pix upload methods for posting pix isn't working right (it isn't) I have no doubt the avatar pix stuff is messed up too. You can shrink your avatar pix yourself, and maybe it'll upload it. If so the errors were caused by an auto-resize function error. But maybe it won't.

There's a work around for posting pix, use photobucket.

Sometimes there's an error posting (w/ or w/out pix) and there's a work around for that: Click OK to close the error message and reload the page.

It's not rocket surgery, it's just talking about boats, man ;)

I have been trying to get my avatar up since being a member. I get the same "unable to obtain original image size" error. I just tried using a pic that is 4kb, same issue. I will try a few other things and let people know if I have any success. But no complaints here, site is great!

Edit: I tried uploading directly from my computer using a 4kb jpeg, a 6kb bmp and I tried uploading the 4kb jpeg from photobucket, same error message.

The error message seems to be related to dimensions. Have you tried scaling the image down ? to about 100 x 100 pixels?

I just tried scaling down a jpeg and bmp to 100x100 and even 85x85 and it says the same thing.

I also cannot add an avatar. I have never been able to do so since becoming a member over a year ago. Is there a certain number of posts that a member must reach in order to be able to access this feature?

Here's what have tried, none of which have worked:

* various image sizes, all less than 100 x 100 pixels, including both square (x by y, where x = y) and non-square (x by y, where x ≠ y) sizes.
* various file types, including PNG, JPG, BMP
* various file sizes, including as small as 4kB to as large as 1MB
* tried using latest version of Safari (7.0.5) and the latest edition of Firefox (28.0), both on a Mac

A previous post in this thread said "It's not rocket surgery,...". I agree, and if we just knew what the parameters are, all the mystery would be cleared up. Somewhere in the parameters that the website administrators control/select there is a list of parameters that have been selected for the use of an avatar. The parameters that are currently listed in the instructions are clearly not correct, because all of the above users have not been able to use an avatar when following those parameters.

Thanks for your attention to this detail.

It looks like the max height and width is set to 100 pixels, maximum file size is set to 3 MB. Try it again.

Same error message and same result.
image.tiff

I tried to upload a JPG file that was 100 x 100 pixels, and only 25kB. It is pasted below.

Starfish 100.jpg

Any other ideas?
Thanks,
Tom

A previous post in this thread said "It's not rocket surgery,...". I agree, and if we just knew what the parameters are, all the mystery would be cleared up.

I meant until the forum software stuff is cleared up, don't get so wrapped up and overwrought about avatars, post counts, speed of loading pages/replies, error messages, figuring out where the icon for Subscribed Topics went, 'finding' the Recent or Today's posts buttons & etc.

This stuff we do here @iboats is in furtherance of a HOBBY intended to RELAX and CALM. Boating isn't supposed to be a do or die choice, it's supposed to be F-U-N: Fun.

Plainly and simply: It isn't rocket surgery..... It's talking about boats ;), man.....

I have no idea what all the constraints are that prevent the current software iteration from performing better, or being fixed, but it isn't performing 100%, yet. So until it is, play some Jimmy Buffet, maybe have a margarita, try to hang on and relax...... I'm confident the IT fellas will get it fixed when they can and just as soon as they can.

Hey Toneeees,
I edited my avatar and everything worked well as far as I can tell. Changed from the default pic to the ChrisCraft logo.
Cheers. :)

Well I say it worked. When I posted it, it looked like it was the right size, but when I look at the avatar next to my post in the thread, the bottom of the pic is cut off.
I resized and reloaded to see if it comes out right on this one. We'll see...

Nope, see the bottom of the pic? Should say Chris-Craft in the script writing. I have sized the pic at 54 x 75 pixels. Any suggestions? Any smaller and it will not be legible.

How about this. I found another and resized it. Hopefully this will work. These guys sure have to be small. Of course I know it's going on a website, just sayin'.

That didn't work either. Seems to be needing a square pic. I'll try again........
