My local Napa, only parts house in the town I live in, I can pull the gaskets off the wall for the 1409. Not even something I have to ask em to find in back.

I just thought I would need them both as there is a spacer there now. Are you suggesting I may not need the spacer?

You probably do not need a spacer just for having a spacers sake. You may need an adapter if you are installing it on a spreadbore intake.

I guess I'll know when I remove the carb. I had it off once before, but I don't remember. The fuel line and linkages are all set up with the adapter, so I'll likely put it back the way it was. On my truck motor, which is the same except its TBI, I put a spacer in between the intake and the tb for performance gains. Does this adapter have the same effect?

The 5.7L up until '95 shipped 4 barrel models with either with a Rochester (spreadbore) or a Weber (squarebore). If you are replacing a Weber with an Edelbrock, the literally everything on your motor will switch right over to the new carb as they are quite literally the same carburetor.

If you are switching from a Roc to the Edelbrock, then you will need an adapter from the spreadbore intake to the squarebore carb, different fuel line from the pump and maybe different throttle linkage mounting bar. The reason for the spread to square bore adapter is so you don't have airflow eddies which cause strange lean and rich events at different carburetor opening points. The adapter smooths the airflow out. The reason for a different hard line from the pump is the inlet is in a different location on a Roc from a Weber/Edelbrock.

Thanks Rick. Should just bolt on. Hope it doesn't need too much tuning.

Thanks for all input. You guys are always helpful.

any auto parts store will have both square bore and spread bore gaskets.... heck, I have about 4 each on the shelf, some with center holes, some with a big plenum hole.

The problem with the parts store is that you need a vehicle in order for the person to look for the part. They don't typically, know how to look for a "part".

As Bondo said.....try a different parts house

you have to vet your parts stores. some are simply idiots behind a counter that wouldn't know one end of a carb from the other. others have been pushing parts for years

Walk into any parts store. ask for gaskets for an SBC. if they ask you year, make, and model, walk out and dont ever go back. if they ask you perimeter or center, then buy parts from them.

I only buy from Advanced, Autozone, or O-Reilly's if I know what I want, have located it in a store via their website and they have it in-stock. then I buy it on-line, save the 20% because their counter people were asking if you wanted fries with that.

I have had the most luck with Napa and Car Quest as well as any parts house that has a machine shop.

Sorry Bondo, thought you meant pics of gaskets. Just reread the post. I don't have it apart yet. Waiting for my buddy to pick the carb up State side. Will post when I have it out.

Ayuh,.... The 1st picture is the 1409 carb gasket,....

Take the adapter, 'n Toss it,....

The 1409 should drop right onto the intake,.....
Just 1 gasket,....
That's why there's 4 holes in the base plate, to fit Both patterns, both sides of the adapter,....

Not to be ungrateful or a pain the a%$, but I was hoping to not change or mess with fuel line. It will be an inch to high if I toss the adapter. Will it run any better if I don't use the adapter.

I finally got my carb. I have a couple questions.

1.

run a purple wire from the coil + to one of the terminals on the choke

In the Edelbrock installation manual, they say not to run off coil or alternator. Is this a big deal? Also, there is a purple and black wire poking out of a harness right at the carb. I think it comes from the coil, as best I can tell. Looks factory.

I'm assuming these are here for the choke. I guess I should check for switched power and ground?

2.

The position for the accelerator pump on my original carb (Carter, in first picture), is in the second hole as described in the instruction manual. It is in the first hole on the 1409 in the second picture. Should I move to the second hole?

Sure is a nice lookin' unit.

Thanks

The top hole is the most pump throw, I’d leave it for now. You can use that wire if you can find the end and hook it to ignition switch power. They sound correct for the task.

dont assume - always check, however most likely it does daisy chain from the coil as GM and Mercruiser have been doing it for decades that way.
