Always sailed or been around boats but this is the first I have owned myself. My husband swore never to touch it.......ha! It is a money drain but you can't put a price on the fun we have with our Gold Glitter EBKO! The last owner had it 24 years- gave me a large file of information, 2 CDs I haven't viewed & loads of 'How to" articles on just about everything. We (meaning my husband!) have replaced the stern (with steel), throttle, wiring, battery, & misc.. Our experiences have ranged from thinking it was on fire (rolling smoke-bad coupler), almost sinking it (forgot the plug), shoving it off the trailer (wrong direction) & endless paddling back to the launch. Oh, there is so much more. This is the best boat for a first time owner. My husband's employee used to own a marina & now works on my boat. It now purrs like a kitten! Here is some info I was given for parts on the '80 Firebird EBKO & 140 hp Merc stern drive: Oil Filters: Fram PH30, Rockhill BBO-49, Bumper to Bumper BT033, Big R Purelator L20049, AC Delco PF25, Mercury Quick Silver 54111 - 4 Qt Penzoil 30 wt. Fuel Filter: NAPA 3038 or 3044 (This filter fits inside top of Fuel Pump and was used on Internat. Harvester Trucks) Carb Filter either CG11 or CG3388 (may not be CG7 or CG8) Impeller for water pump is 47-8998 42. For ignition parts always say '69 Chev Nova engine parts. Points D-1080PVC. Condenser D-203 GM 6 Early.
Wells-Auto Zone: Pts.DR1077MU Condenser U1515 Rotor DR961.
Plugs: AC is MR43T Champions are RBC-8 / Winterizing: fogging engine with 20wt oil, draining engine block and adding RV antifreeze (1 1/2 gal), removed battery checking the cell levels & sprayed the posts with Silicon Lubricant 10-20-06
Hope it helps someone. I will share whatever other 'how to' info I have. Slowly, things are falling apart & we (him) has found stainles staples to repair the seats. There is an oil leak, wood on the engine cover is rotting, the speedometer stopped working & carpet need replacing. Had it 3years but this is the first it ran well enough to pull a skier - but no one has volunteered. Too many times paddling back to dock I guess; scared them all away. Love the bow seating, length, ample seating/storage, & how it handles. The bow is extra wide which makes it hard to find good covers.
By the way, I never asked my husband to fix anything; he did it from love & because he knew how much joy it bought to me & the kids! Did I mention it is Gold Glitter!!! Why do we keep these boats? Read Patrick McManus - Nautical Dymensia Chapter.
