J15RENM ran well last year. I fogged it put away in the well house. Pulled it out today and put in the lake 60 degree water. Fresh non ethanol premium, 50-1 XD 50. It started on 3rd pull and ran normal up to 20 mph with 14' alum. 2 miles later it died at idle no big deal, I ran the electric motor a while. Then it happened. It would not star til about the hundreth pull. I never over choke. I pumped the bulb. I put new Sierra fuel pump recently, and had shop rebuild carburetor at same time. That remedy worked some few years ago. Not used much since. I had three miles to return to dock up gentile wind, Nd I knew my four year old battery would not get me there. I pulled off the cover and looked at the motor. nuthing visually amiss. It started, I shut it down to put the cover back on. I would not start. Another hundred pulls and it started, got me to the dock. I got home put it in the barrel. Pulled the plugs, compression tested at 100 psi top, 107 psi bottom. Wipped oil off plugs, gapped to .034, Started ran I sprayed Deep Creep into carb, ran at mid range rpm till stopped smoking, more Deep Creep,... Then again it would not start. Then I broke the starter return spring. More will be revealed.

Look at the lanyard switch.----Pull the plug to take that switch out of the circuit.----Test for spark.

Don't know "lanyard switch". I am concerned that it would cough want to run but I could not get to gear fast enough in order to open throttle. It will only pull in neutral. Is lanyard switch the man over board switch? How to check for spark? A light bulb on alligator clips?

Yes, man overboard switch could cause spark loss. Best to purchase a spark jump tester.

Problem fixed temporarily. Some pieces of curved plastic found in bottom of motor dish. Apparently the roller cam follower had failed, and changed position of throttle butterfly to full closed. It is a sleeve that wraps around the follower arm which links to the throttle paddle. I simply adjusted the cam follower lever to open the butterfly. May wear with time; Maybe not. Thanks for all replies.
