Re: Easy question on my 59 Evinrude 10 hp

Well, I know you said don't worry about the powerhead but I was just offered a motor with 85-90 compression in both cylinders (same model number 10018). He said the motor needs a tune up and is asking $200 for it. He knows nothing about motors and is simply telling me what the boat shop told him. Should I buy this motor for spare parts? It doesn't have a fuel pump like mine and seems like it would need more updating than mine also. Anyway, what do you guys think about this deal?

If I had one, I'd be glad to sell it for $200 "needing a tune-up". I bought a 5hp Saturday for $25 and a 7.5 for $40. I'll be glad to sell either one of them for $200--AFTER the tune-up.

What do you think a reasonable price would be to offer the guy?

If your motor is as nice as you say it is, then I wouldn't bother buying another powerhead or parts motor. It's not likely your motor is wore out. These were good motors and hold up for a long time. If you want to get a little visual of the condition of the pistons, then you could remove the bypass covers and look for any scoring on the pistons. These can usually be removed without damaging the gaskets. Apply a thin coat of sealer when you re-install the covers.

A full tune up and gearcase reseal will cost about $200-250. Add that to the cost of the motor. Now consider that the motor's value running isn't likely to exceed $250. I wouldn't offer more than $100. I'm not sold that you need another powerhead, however, it is really nice to have a parts motor.

65 psi is low. Seems too low to be correct. The values are even so that's good. If the motor feels like it has compression then I would still proceed with the tune up. Look at it this way, if you are considering buying another motor of the same vintage that will also need a complete tune up as a replacement then you might as well put the money into the one you have now. The tune up parts can be scavenged from your current motor and put on a future replacement if in fact the compression is too low to run. You just might find that the compression comes up once it runs for while.

Now, go spray some penetrating oil like PB Blaster in the spark plug holes and give it a few cranks. Try to coat all the internals really well with oil. The oil may free up the rings if they are sticky. Either way, you want everything well lubricated before you start it for the first time.

Also, don't pull the head unless you absolutely have to.

Re: Easy question on my 59 Evinrude 10 hp

Gave $70 for my '57 10 hp Johnny 10 yrs ago. Rebuilt carb, new impeller, l/u oil; good to go. Also have a spare set of GOOD lower gears for it. Best of my motors. Wouldn't buy a spare motor for $200. WHY???

Too many others out there that are also good to go. Let him have it and you can have fun w/what you have!!

Re: Easy question on my 59 Evinrude 10 hp

Thanks for all the advice and posts guys. I ordered an impellar that I plan on putting on this weekend. I have a service manual but it doesn't do a good job explaning everything for someone not a mechanic. If anyone would be so nice as to give me some good instructions on everything I need to do I sure would appreciate it. Also, is there anything else I need before I go digging in(Some kind of seal kits or anything like that)?? Thanks again for everyones help. I never would have thought so many people would be willing to put up with a newbie and help so much.

Re: Easy question on my 59 Evinrude 10 hp

Well, first check the lower unit oil. If it is milky or has any other obvious signs of water intrusion you should reseal it.

Removing the lower unit is simple. There is an inspection plate on the side of the exhaust tower. Remove the two standard slotted screws that hold it on. Inside you will see the shiftshaft rods connected with a union. Remove the bottom screw/bolt in the union. Now remove the four bolts that hold the lower unit to the exhaust tower. Pull the lower unit straight off. At the base of the drive shaft is the impeller housing. Remove it and replace the impeller. Make sure the small stainless impeller key is in place when you put the new impeller on. Put the impeller housing on top of the impeller and press down as you turn the driveshaft or propeller clockwise. The impeller should slide into the housing as it turns. Installation is the opposite.

Make sure when re-connecting the union that the screw/bolt goes in the groove of the shift shaft rod.
