I have a two-year old Garmin 741xs that started acting up recently. It would often take multiple attempts to power it on. I opened the case just enough to spray electronic contact cleaner on the surface (of the printed wiring board) mount power switch and it's been flawless since. Word of coution, you have to be very careful of the ribbon cables that connect the main body of the unit to the screen and face plate.

send it in to Garmin. costs $40 to have them look, however may only cost you the $40. They replaced my hand-held due to smashed screen for a bit over $60 total.

be careful with the electronic contact cleaner, I found that some plastics don't like that stuff and it may dull some clear plastic displays.

I'm just going to keep my 40 bucks and use it since I already fixed it for free.
