Bought a winch from West Marine, made by Fulton but West has a better price. Very well built and much bigger than the old winch. The drum is much larger but not filled with the strap as it is only 20' so gaining some mechanical advantage there. Also a longer handle with a very comfortable grip and the fast ratio is 5 to 1 an improvement from the 3.8 to 1 on the old winch. I oulled the strap out the length of the boat to see how fast it came back. Pleasantly surprised how quickly the drum filled back up, not as slow as I thought and much easier on the shoulder. The longer crank outs less effort on the bad shoulder. So easy to move into power mode, no handle to change, just flip a small lever!!! Hope to splash it tomorrow to get an actual feel of the improvenent...first impression is a well made product !!

I am sure you are correct, most of the complaints came from much less expensive units!! Unfortunately My issue is not from a heavy boat, just worn out shoulders from working for 50 years. Hard to justify 600 for a 16' aluminum boat winch, but nice to know there are good quality units out there.....thanks
Funny thing, I just retired after 50 years of working. My issues are arthritis, so I can sympathize.

I didn't buy a boat to save money. I DID buy several electrics to save my body so I can hopefully have many more years out in the water. That's MY justification.

(some of the 11 mandates for retirement - eliminate hassles, don't try to save more money, fulfill everything in your bucket list, etc)
