I am trying to remove the decals and residue of my Merc. so I can put new style ones on. So far, I used a hairdrier and peel off a lot but the letters remain. Seems like a layer of sticker was over the letters. There is a ton of residue left. I have used Goof Off but it required a ton of elbow grease. Is there a better way without damaging the paint?

I have replaced the stickers on my motor cowling and on the sides of my boat. after removing the stickers you are left with the sticker residue i have tried many things and have found that charcoal lighter fluid or zippo lighter fluid works better than most of the available products for removing stickers. and it does not hurt the paint job or gelcoat. and leaves no oily residue
good luck

This is a product called "Goof-Off" that you can get at any Home Depot - it is made for just that sort of thing.

i'll probably get a chorus of "don't do that" posts from peeps on here but, if it's an original factory finish, try a test spot of laquer thinner. generally does not budge any factory finish and will remove that glue far quicker than any other product will, hands down... been doing it for years without issue on factory finishs.. but i'm sure someone will chime in with how wrong i am...

I'm with Ralph on this one. The Goof Off works great. It won't damage anything.

There are many citrus based cleaners out there that will do the same thing. They go by various names.

70johnson,do this ,it will work.spray with wd40 and try to let it puddle if you can.Let sit overnight. The next day take a plastic scraper and scrape the goo off.Repeat this if necessary, this will get the tough layer off.the rest will come off with some wd40 on a rag.Been there-Done that!!!Charlie

Well I tried the goof-off, I have two flat and sore thumbnails. I broke out the hair dryer. Finally I broke out the propane torch. I just browned the stickers and off the came. Then followed up with goof-off and the Mequires Body Scrub. My new Mercury sticker are on the way. Thanks to everybody for the advice.
