This can probably be corrected inside the control box. I don't know exactly how, but it has to do with where the cables are connected.

Re: early mercury controls????

The controls for both those motors are likely the same. What most likely happened is that the PO of the 50HP motor installed the gearcase wrong, after repairing the waterpump.

im not shure if the gear select shaft could have been turned 180 so as to operate oppisite of normal i guess i will remove the lower unit and see if i can re orientate the shift shaft 180. Are u familiar with this type of motor???? i have the seloc but it is vague......

Check the operation of the shift cable. When you shift from neutral to forward, the bottom cable (shift cable) will move forward first, followed by the top cable, moving forward next. If you see that behavior, the controls are connected properly. if the top cable moves forst, the cables are switched.

If it is the shift shaft on the gearcase. turn it CCW until it clicks into neutral. Now set the throttle to neutral and install the gearcase.
