My 9.5 horse evinrude won't stay in forward. It always wants to kick out as soon as you give it some throttle. I have to put pressure on the lever but it still jumps hard in and out of gear. I can feel the lever wanting to lift out of gear slowly and the pressure builds up till in jumps. I took appart the bottom gear case and examined everything and everything look mint. I don't get it. I also tried adjusting linkage but everything is good. Nothing works. Any ideas?

If everything looks good in the gearcase, the shift rod probably is not set correctly.

First, make sure that the shift rod coupler is connected correctly. The screw(s) must be removed so that the shift rod is inserted fully, then the screw will hold the rod in the area shown in the thumbnail.

Once that is secured and tested, the shift rod can be adjusted at the top, inside the cowling, by loosening a single screw. See #74 in the second thumbnail.

Thanks rick, I'll have a closer look again at the clutch dog for wear. Maybe it looks good but it could be finished. Probably doesnt take much.
