Early 70's 4 HP Model 40 Mixture

Just bought a early 70's 4 HP low hours/no salt water which will be used mostly as a kicker/"get home" motor. Guy said he used a 16 to 1 mixture......seems very rich. Any experience with lowering this to 40 or 50 to 1 out there?
