i have an early 70's model 105hp (4 cylinder) chrysler outboard which has me completely confused.

i can get it to run fine when hooked up to the hose at my house even though it is alittle difficult sometimes to get it to start. once i get it started it runs ok and then if i check it the next day or a few days later it starts right up and runs good. water does come out the back of the motor in a good stream like it is supposed to when it is running. when we take it out on the water it starts right up and after it warms up for a minute we take off looking for the fish. the acceleration is good at that time but after a few miles of driving the boat the motor seems to just completely lose all power and stalls and never starts again. it has left us stranded 3 different times now and although i just purchased a cheap (much smaller) portable motor as a backup i am not planning on taking the boat out again until i can see if i can figure out what is going on with it. i've done the following to try to fix the problem:

1. checked the plugs after each breakdown and all looks good (even replaced them just to make sure).

2. changed the main fuel line with primer bulb since it looked pretty old (came with the boat when i purchased it a year ago).

3. changed all the fuel out in both fuel tanks to make sure they had good fuel and oil mixture in them. (mixed oil at 50:1 ratio)

4. had a problem with starter solenoid in the beginning so i replaced it with a new one which still seems to be working good and cranks the motor.

5. changed the fluid in the lower unit.

things i have not tried yet (but will be trying soon):

1. cleaning the carb's etc...using the spray as mentioned here in these forums.

2. changing the spark plug wires.

3. the exterior fuel lines on inlet side of motor look pretty old(have purchased replacement lines but have not replaced them yet.

basically the engine idles and seems to run great (when it is running). after running it for a while on the water it just seems to "lose" power and stall and then refuses to restart...please help...i'm tired of getting towed in all the time....

does anyone have any suggestions of other things i might try which may help correct this problem or possibly have an idea of what may be causing this condition?

thanks in advance for any comments....
