Hi all,

I have an Evinrude E35TCSM and I'm trying to drop the lower unit, but having a little problem. I have removed the four securing bolts from the bottom, but the lower unit is still attached by the shift linkage (I believe this is correct?!). The problem I'm facing is that I cannot for the life of me find where to release the shift linkage in order to free the lower unit. Can anyone point me in the right direction, as I have looked everywhere on the engine and on the internet to no avail.

Thanks

The shift rod disconnect is between the two water intake screens on the lower unit.....

Remove both intake screens and disconnect the two sections inside with two 1/2" open end wrenches, hold the lower connector while turning the upper connector, remove and retain the plastic keeper, remove the upper connector after the gearcase and exhaust housing have been separated.....once you have all other bolts/nuts removed you will be able to remove the lower unit.

Re: E35TCSM Lower Unit Removal

Thanks for the reply Mark. I did take a look in there and saw two nuts, a long one and a standard sized one but had my tools in work so unfortunately didn't have a chance to take a proper look. So if I separate the two the lower unit should drop straight out? On a side note, is there meant to be a seal/gasket where the lower unit joins the rest of the the shaft? It looks like the previous owner has just sealed it with some silicone.

Thanks

I edited my original post to give you all the info on how its done.....the two mating surfaces do not require any sealant but it wont hurt to put some there provided you dont get carried away. :D

No problem mate, are you dropping it to service the impeller/water pump? Anything else you are not sure of dont hesitate to ask.....

Re: E35TCSM Lower Unit Removal

Well I've had the engine/boat a little while, but not had a chance to look at it properly due to life getting in the way... The sun is shining so thought I would make some time for it. When I got it I noticed that the previous owner had a mish-mash of bolts holding the lower unit up, and some missing, so the lower unit had dropped a couple of mm. As it had dropped thought it would be best to get it off and take a look at the condition inside, then more than likely do an impeller change at the least.

I am totally new to boat engines, so I'm sure I will be asking a lot more questions, most of them probably being stupid ones! And on that note.... I'm correct in thinking the lower unit should be full of oil right?! As its basically unbolted and there is no oil coming out, I'm guessing that's a bad sign? Or is just the gearing cased and filled with oil?

Re: E35TCSM Lower Unit Removal

Well I managed to get it off, easy when you know how! Next problem... I can see now the lower unit is off that the exhaust housing is cracked. Couple this with the 2 sheerest bolts the previous owner left me, I thought I might enquire as to how much a replacement might be. The online parts catalogue states that they are now obsolete. Is there a new model/available part that will fit?

Thanks for the help so far

On the Home page of this forum (near the top) there is a "Top Secret" file. In that file is a list of salvage companies that can help you find a good, used, replacement, but, depending on where yours is cracked, it can be repaired if you choose that route.

Thanks. However I am in the UK and most of those sites look like US sites, so it may prove difficult! I was hoping eBay would be my friend in this case but can't seem to find anything

The two flat blade screws (plugs) on the side of the casing contain the oil in your lower unit ......one 3/4 of the way up the casing (vent/level plug) and the other under the bullet shape down lower (fill/drain plug).....yes, you fill from the lower plug :D and check from the upper plug.

See if you can have yours repaired at a welding/fabrication shop first.....not sure how many outboard salvage/wrecking yards you might have over there but you are probably in one of the best locations to find one if one exists.
