The previous owner didnt have the rectifier wired properly. So I opted to purchase a new rectifier and install it properly per the manual. Upon running the motor with a multimeter hooked up to the battery I instantly noticed a voltage increase. It got up to 15.1 volts and I shut down the motor in fear of cooking my battery. Is this normal while it’s running at 1500rpm? Could my voltage regulator possibly be toast or was I testing from the wrong spot?
After shutting down the motor i noticed my battery was up to 12.7 from 12.6 volts so it had a slight increase, but how can I ensure it will stop charging once the target voltage is reached?

The regulator is suspect but check the connections and check there is battery volts on the purple wire when the key is in the normal running position.

The increase in voltage is normal.
But you would not expect it to increase to as much as 15 volts if the regulator is working properly, around 14.4 should be the maximum for an ordinary FLA battery.
That said engines without power T&T may have a lower amp output stator and no regulator. The volts can rise higher but the maximum current will be lower.

based on the parts listing you may have a simple full wave diode rectifier (2 yellows a red and frame grounding via the mounting bolt
see pict.ures. $45 ..

if you want a more stable voltage control you need a regulated rectifier
2 yellows a red and a separate wire to frame ground $100 bottom pict.
or try (rig up) a cheaper universal rect/reg on Amazon (good to 16 amps)

Blunt statement----Folks want to go electric everything.-----But getting diagnostics and repairs on electric stuff is going to be a nightmare.------Best start training folks on wires / volts / ohms / amperes soon.----It seems to be a mystery to many folks.

I believe your TL model has a 3 wire rectifier and a separate regulator I agree it seems likely that the regulator has failed but check the connections and that it is wired correctly before buying a replacement.

I think what Racerone just said is, throw that motor away....and get an electric outboard. It's the future.

Tim do you agree?

This is for Tim Tim.

Thank you
