I have a 1995 ranger boat trailer with e-z lube hub system. I need to change a bearing and seal but cannot find any instrutions on how to. I have a steel pin holding on the hub nut. All the diagrams I have found have cottor pin or a snap washer like champion boats. Can this steel pin be removed and reused? I just don'ty want to get into trouble and not be able to find parts. Any help would be great
thanks in advance

Re: e-z lube hubs

Why do you need to replace the bearings and seal?

Yes, you can remove the cotter pin that runs through the spindle nut and cookie cutter. The cotter pin can be re-used and the cookie cutter as well provided you dont damage them in the process.

As far as changing the bearing and seal that will be very difficult for someone other than the manufacturer to do. The bearings are pressed into the hubs and drums by machine. I would contact the manufacturer and see what they suggest. I would guess it would be easier and more time/cost efficient to replace the drum or hub complete with bearings and seals pressed in.

Yes, the steel pins are intended to be reused. Be careful and don't loose them becouse they are hard to find at best. I made quite a few phone calls before I found someone who knew what I was talking about. Everyone kept telling me to replace them with cotters pins which of course don't work on those axles.

As for the bearing, there is nothing to it if you're good with your hands. If you don't know the difference between a seal and a bearing then its best you take it in for servicce.

Changing a bearing is relatively easy, just need to knock out the outer ring and then heat the hubto reinstall (you may have to tap it in useing key steel, not harded steel as in a punch or you will damage the bearing)as there is a slight interferance fit between the hub and outer ring of the bearing. Seals always have to be replaced each time you check a bearing. How else can you pull the inside bearing and inspect it without removing the seal. Seals also have a shorter life span and wear out.
