Is an E-tec engine in the 75-85 hp range much quietier than an older two stroke engine? I am curious as, if I decide to re-engine my boat, a four stroke in the same power range would be too heavy. A friend suggested looking an an E-tec.

Yes ... I own two 175's. About the same fuel burn as 4 stroke at cruise, way better at trolling speeds.

Depending on the size of the engine your looking at and what four stroke your comparing to they aren't much lighter at least not enough that it should be a determing factor. Make sure to compare all of them and the exact model that you need from each
Eg (might not be the specific config you need but just an idea)

Honda 75hp is 359lbs, long shaft
Etec 75hp is 320lbs, long shaft
Suzuki 70hp 341lbs long shaft

Yamaha still makes a 90hp 2 stroke and it weighs in at 261lbs
That might be the one, and its cheaper then those three engines as well, although Iam not sure its as quiet as you might want.
Good luck

Thanks for the good info. It appears that the E-Tec is right up there with the four strokes. No wonder their quieter.
