Dungeness crab season is here for us west coasters. I crab out of Newport Oregon, and 99.9% of the time its just my wife and I. If you are in the area, and want to go, give a post. My boat has been a salty dog for most of it's life so we can take mine. What I need is a person to help pull some traps. Wife is like 110 pounds wet, so pulling a crab trap from 30 ft off the bay's floor ... well she pulls one and she's done. The drugs I'm on treating cancer leaves me weak.. and after I pull 6 traps or so, I'm kind of beat.

My wife doesn't eat crab, so most of what we catch and cook we give away anyway either at the campsite, or when we get back home. So, who ever can go, can have the most amount of crabs. In Oregon its 12 crabs per person daily limit. A couple of yrs ago we had 2 other people on my boat and caught 48 in less then 1 1/2 hours. We were begging people to take some off our hands. I don't go out in open water, I stay in the bay.

Wish I still lived out there. I was stationed in the Puget Sound area and used to simply go "up the road" to the Hood Canal bridge, walk out, and dunk a trap. Found out that 3 day old raw chicken(rotten, double wrapped in ziploc bags to contain the smell until I attatched them to the trap:eek:)was one of their favorites!

Nothing beats good fresh Dungeness!

I'm jealous!

Good luck!

Those crabs, (and how beautiful the coast is) is what keeps me in Oregon. We bought one of those food vacuum things and it works good for crabs. Still have to eat them with a month or they loose some of that fresh no mistaken awesome taste.

Man I get jealous of you salt water guys sometimes.

Then again, nothing in my lake can eat me. That's a plus.

The west coast is rockin this time of year, Dungeness Crab, Abalone and the Bonita are in. Word is the Bonita fishing is HOT right now. I think I'll go get some Sunday. I'm fishing Lake Sonoma for Steelhead in the morning. The river is dead quiet right now. Still a few fat drunks in tubes and canoes wrecking the fishing. Dang it, I have chrome fever bad! Another month and a half and the Winter Run will start... Yee Haw.

That's why I have never eaten shark soup, fins or any other park of a shark.. I figure if I don't eat them.. and I happen to fall over board one day common courtesy would come into play.. hahahaha.

I get a kick out of how much crabs are per pound alive or cooked. Never bought one, and I hope I never have to. Its too much fun catching them yourself. (most of the times anyway).

I was born on the west coast (Orange County Calif) and have stuck close by it my whole life so far.. It's got a hold of me.

Oregon's a bit far for me. But Spiney Lobster season starts here in So. Cal. Sept 29. I'm planning on going out from Oxnard, CA Sept 30 & thereafter.
Anyone around my neck of the woods interested?

Crawdads? Never had one of those. I have seen a lot of them in the fresh water rivers, and brooks though. How do you cook them?

I keep them in a shallow amount of water in a bucket for a few days replacing the water often and rinsing them off. It gets the poo out of them and the crud off their shells. Get a large stock pot 1/2 full of water seasoned with hot sauce (Valentina Xtra hot, please), cut up lemons, and Old Bay then bring it to a boil. Add crawdads, sweet corn and quartered red potatoes. Continue boiling until the corn is finished. Strain the liquid off, lay down newspaper and pour it out on the paper. Amazingly good. Just as good as lobster IMHO.

Making a crawdad trap was easy and the payoff is unbelievable. We've got a small lake/large pond in my dad's town that's absolutely over ran with crawdads. I dropped the trap in at midnight and took it out at 7 the next morning and had 30. The stream at the farm I work for is decent enough too. I did get a otter by mistake one time though. He didn't make it.:( feelsbadman.jpg

That sounds awesome!! Something I would eat every day! You cook them the same as crabs then. Shells still on. Going to have to try them one day and I mean soon. Just sounds too good. I like the idea of getting rid of the poo part. If I had the stomach for it I would "Back" the crabs before I cook em. But, that would be like skinning something alive before you boiled it. Many say it keeps your boiling water cleaner longer. Um.. some people even eat that "stuff" that comes out of the back.. IMO.. anything that isn't meat.. is POO!!
