Dumb question about connecting OMC tach

I have a 1980 Evinrude 35HP and am connecting an OMC tach. I looked at Teleflex website showing the wiring diagram. I connected the gray wire to one wire on the terminal block (and the other wires are connected to switched power, ground and lights). The diagram shows the gray should be connected to 3 of the 4 wires on my terminal block. Right now, the RPM's register 2000 no matter how fast the motor is running. If I connect the gray sensor wire to the three wires on the terminal block (Yellow, yellow/gray, Gray) won't that short all the wires. I ohmed all three wires out, and they have continuity between all three, but I am uncertain if that is because of the rectifier. I don't want to short out anything, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Dumb question about connecting OMC tach

You only need to connect the tach to one of the yellow wires monge. This is usually the yellow w/gray stripe wire.....just to keep a color code.
