Dumb Dumb eska/sears cooling question

K.... here's the story. I recieved a sears/ted williams/eska 5hp for nothing. It's complete. It's a bit rusty, but nothing a couple coats of rustoleum won't fix. It's got 80psi in the hole. Good spark on the board. Looks like its a 71.

I would like to fix it up, clean it up, paint it up, and sell it. But obviously don't want to dump much money into it.

From the parts diagrams it has a water pump.... but the tecumseh powerhead is air cooled. So what does the water pump do and can I do without it? (ya ya.... that's the dumb part because I expect an answer of "if it came with a wp, then of course you need it!! :) )

Does the leg just run a bit hot without it. I'm assuming it's just to cool the exhaust. Will I fry something without it?

Any and all answers appreciated.... And if someones got a SM on PDF that would be most appreciated!!

Cheers...

Your right it does cool the exhaust.
I read a post from a guy that said his engine seized because he ran a similar exhaust cooled motor with a bad waterpump.

Check ebay if your looking for one. The Seller called "SanfordsGoodies" sells them.

I had a WIZARD..........Western Auto,that was,
air cooled and the lower skeg was water cooled because of the exhaust.

When you run it water should mist out the relief holes on the leg.If not check
that the intake is clear then replace the pump.About $35 plus shipping.
More than likely you will need to go through the fuel system if it has sat around a lot.Running good these motors sell for about $100.I would list it as is squirt some fuel into the carb and see if it will run.If it will run and has good compression you might get $50.Not from me though.
10 years ago I sold a Clinton (very similar) after many hours work and new remote tank, running, for about $115 dollars.

I cleaned out the tank with some acid, probably got 90% of the rust out. I also blew out the carb, which surprisingly wasn't to bad. I started it an ran it for 15-20 seconds in some water. It does run.
If I service this thing... clean points, new plugs, gear lube, paint, and water pump... anybody think i'll see 250 for it?

i've been thinking about listing it both ways. with 2 prices.

Check out ebay. Any one that pays $250 for an Eska would have to be comepletely uninformed. Another 50 bucks you could get as real motor like a Evinrude/Johnson 5,5.5 or 6 hp.Smoother quieter, more powerful and parts available in dozens of places. The Clinton I sold had very low hours
though somewhat neglected, ran good, looked excellent and had an original new Clinton remote tank.$115 and I delivered 50miles for gas.
Paid $7 for the motor.Bought the tank seperate.$18 plus shipping.
I probably had at least 10 hours invested though that part was fun.

Highly doubt that you'll see $250 for that motor in excellent condition.

Cut your losses and sell it before dumping any more work or money in it to maximise your profit.

Good Luck,
